Another kind of judgment for Supreme Court
(August 12,2010)
The Supreme Court building – widely panned before its opening – has been shortlisted for two international awards.
The $80 million building in central Wellington is a finalist at the World Architecture Festival Awards in Barcelona in November and the Structural Awards in Britain, also in November.
The project involved the construction of the new Supreme Court building and the restoration of the neighbouring 130-year-old High Court, a category 1 historic building.
The building's big talking point is the eight-metre-high bronze screen that wraps around the glass-box building and cost nearly $4.5m to make. It was described by one architect as "like putting a veil on an ugly face".
Warren and Mahoney Architects was behind the design and Holmes Consulting Group provided the structural engineering services. Warren and Mahoney director Roy Wilson said it was gratifying that a New Zealand heritage building was receiving recognition on the world stage.
"Integrating the two contrasting buildings presented both architectural and structural challenges. The unique nature of the project required a holistic design approach to ensure the architecture, structure and services could co-exist in harmony."
Eva Cutriss, a project director with Holmes Consulting, said the restoration of the old building and the construction of the new court required specialist techniques and cutting-edge technology.
