Richina’s New Zealand Construction subsidiary Mainzeal has been awarded as the preferred main contractor for National Library building redevelopment in Wellington

The National Library of New Zealand Te Puna Mātauranga o Aotearoa has awarded Mainzeal with Preferred Main Contractor status for its Wellington building redevelopment in Molesworth Street.

Designed in the 1970s and built in the 1980s, the National Library building is no longer fit for purpose, and is running out of storage space. The redevelopment will fix leaks on the Library’s roof and ground floor plaza, replace out-of-date systems, fix plant and machinery and optimise research spaces, as well as providing appropriate space and environments to store the collections for the next twenty years.

Mainzeal will commence planning work with the National Library this month, with construction on the National Library’s roof and plaza level expected to begin in November. The building will reopen in 2012.

National Library Acting Chief Executive Tony Murray said that Mainzeal was awarded the contract based on a range of criteria including value, resources, experience and collection care.

Mr Murray said the continued care, protection and security of the heritage collections was a priority. ”Over the past year, we have put in place long-term preservation and packaging solutions for the collections, to ensure they are kept safe. The collections remaining in the building are stored in protected areas that the redevelopment won’t affect.

“As an additional measure, both the National Library and Mainzeal will appoint dedicated staff to work with our conservators and curators to monitor the collections throughout,” said Mr Murray. “Mainzeal also has a great deal of experience in keeping people and property safe while they carry out construction.”

The National Library’s heritage collections protection expert, engaged last year, will continue to provide independent advice throughout the redevelopment.

Mainzeal will join the team led by Impact Project Management, who are working with the National Library on the building redevelopment programme.

The National Library building, located in Molesworth Street, is currently closed to the public in preparation for the construction. National Library services and access to selected collections is available at two central Wellington locations, 77 Thorndon Quay and Archives New Zealand.

The redevelopment will cost $52 million, which includes $35 million in capital spending and $17 million in operational spending.
